Following the brutal rape of a young woman by a gang of construction workers, a mysterious figure wearing a motorcycle helmet and driving a gold hearse begins hunting the perpetrators down. Minutes later, they are called to the road outside of town where the hitchhiker was nailed to the concrete in the middle of the road. And there is much laughter to be had too because the filmmaking is awful, the dialogue is awful, the acting of that dialogue is awful, etc. A little bit of rape, followed by lots of bloody revenge. I'll give them credit for the look of the killer since I find it unlikely they saw Strip Nude. Set in a small rural Texas town, the film opens with a young woman named Linda, co-owner of a lumber yard with her brother Bubba, being viciously assaulted and gang raped by a group of construction workers after dropping off some material for them.
Just who is this murderous vigilante? As Mark revs up the chainsaw, the killer sneaks up behind him and shoots him in the back of the neck. As the sheriff and doctor conduct their investigation, more potential innocent victims turn up in the form of a trio of friends named Tom, John and Maxine, who move into the first victim's house, seemingly the center point of the ongoing massacre, along with old County Line Road, which a mysterious golden hearse has been prowling as of late. When Doc, the town doctor and coroner, arrives at the crime scene, the sheriff shows him the bodies. Most of the time, the kills are filmed with dummy parts when you see a nail impale the target or filmed immediately after the nail has already entered and you get the shock reaction of the victim. Linda walks up to the dead killer and removes his helmet, revealing him to be Bubba. It doesn't help matters that there's no central character in this thing. Lofton later produced a making-of the film in 2005 titled Nail. There are moments of unintentionally hilarious reprieve on display throughout the film. When the carpenter mentions the raping, the killer kills him. A bunch of fat white guys hovering over some girl we can barely make out. Even saying that they just bled to death over time would be stretching it. The sheriff and Doc are called to the hardware store where a young woman was found nailed behind the store.
The acting overall is bad, but passable by eighties slasher standards. They modify the killers voice as well. The killer then murders a couple making out on the hood of their car, and a family man in a suburban house. No scenes to set this up. Clearly a lot of ad libbing going on by actors not cut out for it. A pulsing synth score accompanies most of the scenes, and is admittedly a bit overbearing, while the killer hurls goofy one-liners at the victims in an inexplicable robot voice. The top one is an unsubtle wink at the title similarities with Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the bottom one is a funny pun on the subject matter.
Nudity: 8 — There are a couple of terrific, long shots of beautiful, big-breasted women. He then stops the car and kills the hitchhiker. Hey, for a low budget flick it works quite well but when the killer starts popping out of a pool to catch a victim by surprise, the gimmick has more than run its course. It's not good, I guess, is the gist of what I'm trying to say. Also, it was fucking hilarious. The killer nails Ben's hands to a tree.
The next day, two carpenters are working on a house when they playfully shoot at each other with nail guns. The photography of the woods captures a strange foreboding that, whether intentional or just a happy accident, is far more nuanced than anything else about the film. How the fuck do you blow this premise? The killer climbs up a crane, but slips and falls to his death. Hal and Ben arrive with their girlfriends Ann and Trish, to ask the owner, Bubba, for a job. Trish urges Ben to look for them. Mark falls and the chainsaw severs his hand. This thing has no characters, no sense of location most of this takes place in the woods.
Five months later, a person in camouflage clothing and black motorcycle helmet kills one of the rapists with a. However, the best way to enjoy the movie is to laugh at how bad it is. If I had watched this before the internet, I probably would have enjoyed it more. A figure dressed in camo, a helmet and a bright yellow oxygen tank for the nail gun shows up and hunts down several victims throughout the film, and surprisingly most of them were involved in the aforementioned opening rape scene.
