Sometimes and this can happen only once a week, month or longer, when transmission is changed from Park to Drive, a hard jolt is felt and as the car starts to move and shift into higher gears, the gear change is hard accompanied with a jolt as it moves thru higher gears until vehicle reaches full speed and the same heavy jolting and jerking happens when the automatic transmission is downshifting when the car is slowing down. They have redesigned the clutch drum ,to move the snap ring away from the drum's edge and constructed the drum of stronger material and an increased of the drums thickness. . This is a safety issue and a recall is warranted. If what the dealer told you was true, he'd have reset the light himself. He's been driving it for about 2 months now and he still gets out of the car with a smile on his face. The point is that unless you can do much of the repairs yourself, you could quickly reach a point where it is going to cost you much more than the car is worth to repair it. The car was well maintained with no symptoms leading up to the failure. When I completed my dialogue of what had occurred he responded that I was number 4 for him this year. The best way to find true answer if problem happens is have car sent to a actual transmission shop not a regular automotive or german shop unless they're specialized in internal transmission work also. The good thing is that parts for an E46 are usually pretty inexpensive. Just save up the 2G to replace the drum, From what I understand the replacement part is made of a better quality metal. I took the car to the dealership and they told me that all 3 series manufactured between 03-03 to 11-03 have this problem and it is due to the transmission. This has happened several times usually after not driving the car for several hours. No reverse has stopped working. It's real good info, but you guys are making me paranoid. The problem is widespread in owners of early 2000 Bmws and results from a reverse drum that is poorly manufactured and not sufficiently thick around the edges.
